미국 뉴욕 보스턴 여행의 세번째 날은 보스턴의 유명한 Freedom Trail 을 따라 걷는 일정이다.

 

프리덤 트레일(Freedom Trail)은 1958년 지역 저널리스트인 윌리엄 스코필드(William Schofield)에 의해 시작되었다. 그는 1951년부터 주요 유적지를 연결하는 보행구간을 만들고자 계획하였다. 보스턴 코먼(Boston Common), 보스턴 옛 주 의사당(Old State House), 파크 스트리트 교회(Park Street Church), 그래너리 공동묘지(Granary Burying Ground), 폴 리비어 하우스(Paul Revere House)를 포함한 16개의 유명한 역사유적지가 하나의 대로(大路)로 연결되어 있다. 총 길이는 보스턴 코먼에서 찰스타운의 벙커힐 기념탑까지의 4km이며, 보스턴 국립 역사공원의 일부이다. 오늘날, 전 세계의 관광객들이 보스턴의 역사를 체험할 수 있는 장소가 되었다. / [네이버 지식백과] 프리덤 트레일 [Freedom Trail] (두산백과)

* Freedom Trail Sites

1. Boston Common (보스턴커먼) : The oldest public park in the country; it was once used as a cow pasture for grazing herds and as a training area for the militia.

2. The State House (메사추세츠 주 의사당) : Designed by Charles Bulfinch, a famed Bostonian architect of the time, the building was completed in 1798. It is considered to be Bulfinch's finest work.

3. Park Street Church (파크 스트리트 교회) : Built in 1809, this was the site of William Lloyd Garrison's first anti-slavery address in 1829. Open July and August for historical tours.Open Tuesday-Saturday from 9:30am-3:30pm.

4. Old Granary Burial Grounds (그래너리 묘지): This 1660 cemetery is the final resting place for a host of historical figures, including three signers of the Declaration of Independence, eight governors and five victims of the Boston Massacre. Open during daylight hours only.

5. King's Chapel (킹스채플) : The first Episcopal church in Boston, it became the first Unitarian church in America after the Revolution. Open May-September, Monday-Saturday 10am-4pm; Open March-May and September-October on Monday, Friday, and Saturday from 10am-4pm. Open November-February on Saturday from 10am-4pm. * Donation suggested for groups

6. First Public School & Ben Franklin's Statue (벤저민프랭클린 동상): Built in 1636, Boston Latin School was attended by Samuel Adams, John Hancock, Ben Franklin, Cotton Mather and other noted historical figures.

7. Former Site of the Old Corner Bookstore (올드 코너 서점) : Now a jewelry store, this building, one of the oldest in Boston, was where many famous books found publication, including The Scarlet Letter and Walden.  Located on the corner of School and Washington Streets.

8. Old South Meeting House (올드 사우스 집회소) : It was here that outraged colonists met on Dec. 16, 1773 for what became known as the Boston Tea Party. *admission fee required

9. Old State House (올드 스테이트 하우스) : Built in 1713 as the first seat of the Colonial government. John Hancock, first governor of Massachusetts, was inaugurated here. Open November-April, Monday-Friday 10am-4pm, Saturday 9:30am-5pm and Sunday 11am-5pm. *admission fee required

10. Boston Massacre Site (보스턴 학살의 장소) : The site is marked by a ring of cobblestones and shows where the first bloodshed of the revolution took place on March 5, 1770.

11. Faneuil Hall (퍼네일 홀) : Built in 1742 and presented to the town by Peter Faneuil, the hall has been a meeting place upstairs and a marketplace downstairs ever since. The fourth floor is now the home of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company Museum. Open daily 9am-5pm.

12. Paul Revere House (폴 리비어 하우스): Located in Boston's North End is the Paul Revere House. The oldest house in Boston, this is where Paul Revere started his famous ride. Open November to April 9:30am-4:15pm. Open April to October 9:30am-5:15pm. (Closed Mondays). *admission fee required

13. Old North Church (올드 노스 교회): Built in 1723 as a "House of prayer for all people", this is the city's oldest standing church. It was from the steeple of this church that Sexton RobertNewman hung two lanterns to warn of the British attack. Open daily 9 am-5 pm. Sunday services conducted 9 am, 11 am, 4 pm.

14. Copp’s Hill Burying Ground (코프스 힐 묘지) : Founded in 1659, Copp’s Hill is the second oldest cemetery in Boston and contains the remains of some of the most notable Bostonians of the colonial period. Open daily 9 am-5 pm.

15. USS Constitution (USS 컨스티튜션) : Nicknamed "Old Ironsides", the USS Constitution is the oldest commissioned warship in the world. Launched in 1797 from Boston Navy Yard, she sailed against the Barbary pirates and fought the British in the war of 1812. To this day Old Ironsides has never lost a battle. Open daily 9 am-5 pm.

16. Bunker Hill Monument (벙커힐 기념탑) : The monument was built to commemorate the first major battle of the American Revolution fought here on June 17, 1775. Open daily 9 am-4:30 pm.

 

 

이 트레일을 시작하기 위해서 Boston Common Park 으로 아침 일찍 길을 나섰다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

길을 나서기전, Visitor Information Centre 에서 화장실을 이용하고, 간단한 기념품 (하버드 대학 뱃지) 도 구입하였다.

 

 

 

 

트레일은 알아보기 쉽게 붉은 라인으로 칠해져 있어서 그 길만 따라 가면 되었다. 가다보니 준비해갔었던 책자에 나온 마크가 나왔는데, 이 프리덤 트레일을 상징하는 마크인것 같다.

 

 

 

 

직장인들이 출근을 하는 평일 오전 이른 시간인데도 공원에 사람들이 제법 나와있었다.

정문이 굳게 닫혀 있어 못들어가나 싶었는데, 옆쪽에 동상있는 곳으로 들어가는 입구가 있어 간단히 둘러보았다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

그리고 길가에 그냥 묘지가 있었는데 이 곳이 그래너리 묘지 (Granary Burying Ground) .  미국 독립혁명당시 죽은 사람들이 묻혀있다고 한다.

The Site of the Boston Massacre. 보스턴 대학살 장소.

보스턴 대학살은 "1770년 3월 5일 보스턴 시의 부두에서 술을 마시던 노동자들과 주둔군 사이에 시비가 붙은 일이 유혈 사태로 확대된 사건이다. 식민지 인들이 주둔군에게 눈덩이를 던졌고, 그 눈덩이에 맞은 군인이 화가나서 식민지인들에게 발포했다. 이 사건으로 5명이 숨졌다. 인쇄물에 고액세금을 매긴 〈인지세법〉, 설탕·커피·포도주를 포함한 대부분의 수입품에 관세를 부과하기로 결정한 〈설탕법〉 등으로 인한 식민지 사람들과 본국인 영국 간의 대립이 발생 배경이다. "

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

보스턴의 유명한 시장인 퀸시 마켓 (Quincy Market).

 

 

 

 

이것저것 먹을거리를 많이 팔아서 그냥 지나치기는 힘든 곳이다.

 

 

 

 

아침에 장사를 시작할때 쯤의 한 가게에 들어가서 새우한접시를 먹었다.

USS Constitution.

 

올드 아이언사이드(Old Ironside)로 더 잘 알려진 콘스티튜션호는 해상 최고의 군함이자 세계에서 가장 오래된 군함이다. 1787년에 제작된 콘스티튜션호는 견고하고 웅장한 모습이 인상적이다. 콘스티튜션호 기념관에는 콘스티튜션호와 관련된 그림, 서적, 간행물과 기념품이 전시되어 있으며, 콘스티튜션호의 건조(建造) 기록, 항해기록과 보존방법 등이 전시되어 있다.  / [네이버 지식백과] 콘스티튜션호 기념관 [USS Constitution] (저스트고(Just go) 관광지, 시공사)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

프리덤 트레일의 마지막사이트인 Bunker Hill Monument.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

이 곳 Bunker Hill Monument 를 끝으로 프리덤 트레일은 마무리.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

미국사람들처럼 멋있게 걸어보라고 하니, 바쁘게 걷는 New Yorker 를 따라하는 Amy.  

 

프리덤 트레일을 끝마치고 숙소로 가서 맡겨두었던 짐을 다 챙겨 나와서 뉴욕가는 메가버스를 타기 전까지 남는 시간에는 South Station 에서 그나마 가까운 Quincy Market  에서 시간을 보내기로 하고 다시 나왔다.

 

 

 

퀸시 마켓 근처로 와서, 근처에 있는 항구에서 시간을 잠시 보냈다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

아이들은 이 곳 잔디에서도 Gymnastic 삼매경.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Quincy Market 앞에는 마술과 노래, 기타 약간의 Show 를 보여주면서 돈을 버는 사람이 있었다. 미국이라는 곳은 여행다니다 보면 참 다양하게 길거리에서 돈을 버는 사람들을 많이 보게 되는것 같다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

퀸시마켓에서 저녁을 해결하고서는 보스턴 여행을 마무리하고 South Station 에서 메가버스를 타고 다시 뉴욕으로 향했다. 

보스턴이라는 도시는 뉴욕과는 다르게, 제법 정돈되어 있어서 약간 캐나다 스러운 느낌을 받을 수 있었는데, 대학들과 프리덤트레일을 걸으면서 한적하게 시간을 보낼수 있는 곳이었던것 같다.
